  • Fat could help You Lose Weight, Someday | NPR (4 min): "We all know there's good cholesterol and bad cholesterol. It turns out there's good and bad fat, too. The good fat is medically known as "brown adipose tissue." It's good because it burns calories. The more familiar fat ? known as white fat, although it's actually yellowish ? stores up calories and stubbornly accumulates around waistlines, thighs and bottoms."

  • Science and Reason: Adiponectin: As we noted in this article back in July, there are several hormones and neurotransmitt ers that have noteworthy effects on appetite and eating behavior, and as a result are of much interest with respect to weight gain (or loss) and obesity. The two mentioned in that article were NPY and PYY. The protein leptin is another hormone of this sort. It is often discussed in connection with obesity, because it is believed to increase metabolism and decrease appetite (as a signal of satiety). Another hormone, ghrelin, is produced in the stomach as a signal of hunger, and so it increases appetite.

  • Exposure of Americans to polybrominated diphenyl ethers: The exposure of Americans to PBDEs was systematically evaluated in this study. The exposure pathways evaluated included food and water ingestion, inhalation, and ingestion and dermal contact to house dust. These intakes were converted to a body burden using a simple pharmacokineti c (PK) model. The predicted body burdens were compared with representative profiles of PBDEs in blood and milk. An important finding from this assessment is that the food intake estimate cannot explain current US body burdens; exposures to PBDEs in house dust accounted for 82% of the overall estimated intakes. The literature was surveyed for measurements of BDE congeners in environmental/ exposure media, in blood, and in breast milk. Representative congener concentration profiles were assigned to these media for purposes of exposure assessment. In compiling the data, it was observed that there has not been consistency in the measurement and reporting of BDE congeners. ** Great discussion & refs
  • Rapidly Increasing Polybrominated Diphenyl Ether Concentrations in the Columbia River System from 1992 to 2000: Concentrations and congener patterns of 32 individual PBDE congeners from mono- through hexa-brominate d were investigated in two fish species occupying similar habitatsbut having different diets and trophic levelsand surficial sediments from several locations on the major river system of western North America, the Columbia River, in southeastern British Columbia, Canada. Total PBDE concentrations have increased by up to 12-fold over the period from 1992 to 2000 in mountain whitefish from the Columbia River, with a doubling period of 1.6 years. The rate at which PBDE concentrations are increasing in whitefish is greater than has been previously reported worldwide. At the current rate of increase, ?PBDE will surpass those of ?PCB by 2003 to become the most prevalent organohalogen contaminant in this region.
  • Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers and Polychlorinate d Biphenyls in Human Adipose Tissue from New York: Human adipose tissue samples (n = 52) collected in New York City during 2003?2004 were analyzed for the presence of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and polychlorinate d biphenyls (PCBs). Concentrations of PBDEs in adipose tissues ranged from 17 to 9630 ng/g, lipid wt (median: 77; mean: 399 ng/g, lipid wt; sum all di- through hexa-BDE congeners). Average PBDE concentrations in human adipose tissues from New York City were 10- to 100-times greater than those reported for European countries.
