The company is aiming to file an investigationa l new drug application (IND) for an ES-cell-based therapy for eye disorders this year, and from pre-IND discussions with the FDA, Lanza knows that they have to be absolutely certain that their cells are well characterized. "If 1% of our stem cell population is undifferentiat ed, it could result in tumour formation or putting the wrong tissue type in the wrong organ," he says.
