  • Black-hole analogue traps sound - physicsworld.c om: A good plain-language explanation: "Their system comprises a Bose?Einstein condensate (BEC), or a collection of cold atoms that move coherently in the same quantum state. The BEC contains two potentials: one crater-shaped ?harmonic? potential, which is formed via magnetic fields, and a deeper, superimposed ?Gaussian? potential, which is formed with a laser beam. By shifting the potential sideways, the researchers found that atoms fell in and climbed out of the potential at a speed faster than sound in the medium, or about 1 mm/s. This supersonic travel is key to the success of the system. If a sound wave approaches the atoms in the opposite direction as their movement, it will reach the atoms but will never be able to leave. In this instance, the moving atoms act as a sonic ?black hole?, from which no sound can leave. Conversely, if the atomic flow ?velocity gradient? is altered, the sound wave will never reach the atoms, in which case they act as a sonic ?white hole?."

  • Bose?Einstein condensate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia: "A Bose?Einstein condensate (BEC) is a state of matter of a dilute gas of weakly interacting bosons confined in an external potential and cooled to temperatures very near to absolute zero (0 K, ?273.15 °C). Under such conditions, a large fraction of the bosons collapse into the lowest quantum state of the external potential, and all wave functions overlap each other, at which point quantum effects become apparent on a macroscopic scale. [...] "Condensa tes" are extremely low-temperatur e fluids which contain properties and exhibit behaviors that are currently not completely understood, such as spontaneously flowing out of their containers. The effect is the consequence of quantum mechanics, which states that since continuous spectral regions can typically be neglected, systems can almost always acquire energy only in discrete steps. If a system is at such a low temperature that it is in the lowest energy state, it is no longer possible for it to reduce its energy, not even by friction." ;
