  • 10 Great Green Opportunities (By Brita Belli, Kathryn Gutlebar, Julia Hirsch, Jesica Knoblauch, Shawn Query): Eco Educators: Green Learning 7) Over the past few years, sustainability coordinators?a job position that didn?t even exist a few years ago?have been joining the ranks of educational institutions looking to ?go green.? ?We get calls constantly from institutions looking to hire sustainability professionals, ? said Tom Kimmerer, executive director of the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE). Dedee DeLongpre, director of the Office of Sustainability at the University of Florida, was part of a pioneer program at Presidio School of Management in San Francisco, which began offering an MBA in Sustainable Management in 2003. ?They wove principles of sustainability into all of the coursework,? said DeLongpre. ?It was an amazing opportunity.? DeLongpre says that the best part about her job is working with the students. ?Their world isn?t about obstacles,? said DeLongpre, ?It?s inspired by possibilities and innovation.?

  • IAU - Sustainable Development - Background and Evolution: The United Nations Environment Programme just launched the CD-ROM "Sustaina bility Communications ? A Toolkit for Marketing and Advertising Courses". It is produced by UNEP in partnership with UNESCO, the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development and the IAU, with financial support from Sweden. The CD-ROM provides resources for the educators training tomorrow?s marketing and communication professionals as well as for marketing and advertising trainers in the corporate field. It is not a ?turnkey? teaching syllabus but a flexible, interactive tool which provides a synthesis of theoretical and methodological knowledge illustrated by numerous specific case studies. In this regard, it offers all kinds of pedagogic resources ? short presentations, campaign analyses, exercises, web links, bibliographies and more than 300 downloadable documents ? to encourage students and communication experts to think about and involve themselves in one of the major issues facing society today.

  • International Forum on ESD December 2008: The UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD), which was proclaimed by the General Assembly in 2002 and launched in 2005, will mark the mid-point of DESD at the end of 2009. Since the inception of the Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD), the international community has discussed the needs; fundamental concepts; and objectives of ESD, while recognizing its key importance for future generations. For the mid-point of the Decade, UNESCO and its Member States will have opportunities to discuss the achievements and challenges in the implementation of the DESD. The International Forum on ESD Dialogue 2008 will move beyond these efforts to define ESD, and seek to identify strategically conceptualized actions for the implementation and achievement of DESD objectives in line with the International Implementation Scheme (IIS).

  • UNIVERSITY TOOLKIT FOR SUSTAINABILITY COMMUNICATIONS: In the midst of a global agricultural crisis and six years after the World Summit on Sustainable Development (which concluded that ?the greatest problem with sustainable development is that it has not entered the public consciousness? ) environmental issues are today at the forefront of media topics. This media kit addresses sustainable development on the social and economic fronts. It draws on existing experience and recommends resources for further inquiry and research. The media kit was launched on 14 April 2008, during the 179th Session of UNESCO?s Executive Board.
