  • PLCO Etiology and Early Marker Studies (EEMS): The Etiology and Early Marker Studies (EEMS) is a component of the PLCO Trial. By collecting biologic materials and risk factor information from trial participants before the diagnosis of disease, PLCO EEMS adds substantial value to the trial, providing a resource for cancer research, focused, in particular, on cancer etiology and early markers. Etiologic studies investigate the environmental, biochemical and genetic risk factors for cancer. Early detection studies aim to develop reproducible, diagnostics-re ady biomarkers of early disease.

  • Diabetes News from dLife.com: Fat-Derived Inflammatory Factor May Explain Diseases That Come with Obesity: Fat tissue known as white adipose tissue (WAT) is primarily involved in energy storage in the form of triglycerides and energy release in the form of free fatty acids...[I]t also secretes numerous other factors with roles in both health and disease....CXC L5 is one of those factors...expr essed at high levels in WAT, particularly in immune cells known as macrophages... CXCL5 is dramatically increased in the blood of people who are obese...CXCL5 levels drop when obese people lose weight and are also lower in obese individuals that continue to respond to insulin....Ove rall, the findings show that CXCL5 produced by fat tissue "represen ts a link between obesity, inflammation, and insulin resistance.&qu ot; [T]he CXCR2 receptor is active outside of muscle, in cells that line blood vessel walls and in the lung and intestine, [so that] increased CXCL5 circulating levels as observed in obesity could lead to other problems, including atherosclerosi s and other inflammatory diseases.

  • Diabetes and Heart Disease Risk Starts at Birth | Canoy, D et al. Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism 2009-06: Lower weight at birth may increase inflammatory processes in adulthood, which are associated with chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes...Bot h the fetal and infancy periods are sensitive, critical stages of growth and development. Studies have previously suggested babies with lower weight at birth are at a higher risk for developing chronic diseases...[A] n association between lower weight at birth and inflammation in adulthood may provide [an] explanation. Inflammation is a normal physiologic response of the body, and serves as a host defense which provides protective response to infection or tissue injury. If the source of infection or injury is not repressed, low-grade inflammation can persist and may promote the development of heart disease or diabetes. Earlier studies have found that babies born small for gestational age have weak immune systems, but at six years old have more white blood cells than babies born at a normal weight.
