  • Research Initiatives | URI Graduate School of Oceanography: The scientific research carried out at GSO focuses on expanding our civilization&# 039;s knowledge of interactions of the Earth's basic systems. This is being achieved through the application of faculty and marine scientists expertise to pursue cutting-edge research and technology that will make major contributions to the understanding of the Earth's geosphere, atmosphere, biosphere and hydrosphere.

  • Earth Today - National Air and Space Museum Exhibit: The ability to see Earth from space has forever changed our view of the planet. We are now able to look at the Earth as a whole, and observe how its atmosphere, oceans, landmasses, and life interact as global systems. Earth's atmosphere, hydrosphere, geosphere, and biosphere are dynamic, changing on timescales of days, minutes, or even seconds. Monitoring the Earth in near real-time allows us to get an up to date picture of conditions on our planet.

  • IRIS - Animation of the Month: Animations that help students and educators understand seismology and earthquakes.
  • Mineral Resources Education Program of BC: Browse a series of videos explaining the origin and extraction of diamonds in Canada.
  • Cool Geology Animations: plate tectonics, rocks, landslides, weathering, earthquakes and more: Find links to 14 different animations and exercises. Links (2) - (4) describe three specific exercises that are particularly well done. There are interactive flash animations and exercises for physical geology class. suitable for a review or overview of these topics at the college or high school level: groundwater, metamorphic rocks, igneous rocks, plate tectonics, rock cycle, earth structure, weathering, sedimentary rocks, minerals, faults and folds, mass movement, floods, glaciers, and shores.
  • Windpower: USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center: The USGS Patuxent Wildlife Research Center is conducting a number of studies that will give regulating agencies and wind farm developers some of the tools they will need to make informed decisions.
  • Alaska Volcano Observatory - Okmok - Eruption Page: The USGS Alaska Volcano Observatory provides current photos and monitoring data related to the eruption of the Okmok Volcano in Alaska. You can also learn how to collect ash that might be falling from the eruption in your area.
  • GPS Time Series: Plate velocities based on sattelite data.
  • SIMILE | Timeline | Examples | Dinosaurs 2: An interactive geologic timeline on the existence and extinction of dinosaurs.
  • Major Earth Science Misconceptions : Huh, That?s Interesting?: Earth science misunderstandi ngs
  • Natural Hazards Gateway: The USGS Natural Hazards Gateway offers a one-stop shop to learn about natural hazards (earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, landslides, tsunamis, volcanoes, and wildfires). The site also links to real-time data that can be useful to citizens and emergency support personnel who must make important decisions before, during, and after a natural disaster.
  • 2002 Earthquake Probability Mapping: You can generate a customized earthquake rate and probability model from 2002 for any zip code in the US. The site allows you to control both the magnitude threshold (down to 5.0) and the exposure time. Because this is dealing with probabilities I would recommend reviewing the links regarding "what the various parameters mean" before discussing the numbers with students.
