  • Researchers Discover Probable Molecular Site Of Alcohol And Anesthetic Actions: A few years ago, the two labs in Chicago and Denver demonstrated that clinically relevant concentrations of inhaled anesthetics and alcohol enhanced the effects of a neurotransmitt er called GABA (gamma-aminobu tyric acid) and its close relative glycine.
  • Gene therapy offers new hope for treatment of peripheral neuropathy: Scientists use HSV-1 to plugin a glycine gene to rats, and then administered glycine to effectively control pain in a rat model.
  • Antiepileptic drug developed at Hebrew University to undergo phase three clinical trials: Glycine is one of the inhibitory acids, and increasing its concentration in the brain has an antiepileptic effect. However, it is impossible to administer it to patients in its natural state, because it cannot penetrate the blood-brain barrier that prevents medications from reaching their target sites.
  • Nervous inhibitions: The brain, however, cannot function without GABA and glycine release. Mice without VIAAT are completely unable to move.
  • U of T research finds glycine could be key to REM Sleep Behavior Disorder: John Peever, Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto, discovered that an inhibitory brain chemical called glycine is responsible for actively suppressing muscle twitches in REM sleep. Deficiency in glycine levels in the brain cells that control muscles (motoneurons) was found to cause the violent muscle contractions that mimic the primary symptom of RBD.
  • How did glycine significantly decrease liver injury?: The nonessential amino acid glycine has been shown to be anti-inflammat ory in several animal injury models. Recent studies demonstrated that dietary glycine protected both the lung and liver against lethal doses of endotoxin in rat or other animals and improved graft survival after liver transplantatio n. [...] Moreover, the data indicated that glycine decreases liver injury under the conditions of experimental cholestasis thru a direct effect on hepatocytes.
  • GABA and Glycine
  • Protein in human hair shows promise for regenerating nerves: ?We found that the nerve repair happened more quickly and consistently, and that functional recovery was higher,? [...] "We believe that keratin helps amp up Schwann cell activity and give the nerve regeneration process a head start.? KERATIN CONSISTS PRIMARILY OF GLYCINE.
  • Taking a supplement of glycine helps prevent [inflammatory] degenerative diseases such as arthrosis or osteoporosis: The direct intake of glycine as a food additive helps to prevent arthrosis and other degenerative diseases, in addition to other diseases related to a weakness in the mechanical structure of the organism, including the difficulty of repairing physical injuries. [...] "The conclusion of this study is that glycine, administered in daily doses of 10 grams divided into two doses of 5 grams "one in the morning and one at night" leads to a general improvement in these problems over a period of time which, in most cases, is between two weeks and four months."
