  • Washington Post sells access, $25,000+ - Mike Allen - POLITICO.com: "The astonishing offer is detailed in a flier circulated Wednesday to a health care lobbyist, who provided it to a reporter because the lobbyist said he feels it?s a conflict for the paper to charge for access to, as the flier says, its ?health care reporting and editorial staff." The offer ? which essentially turns a news organization into a facilitator for private lobbyist-offic ial encounters ? is a new sign of the lengths to which news organizations will go to find revenue at a time when most newspapers are struggling for survival." ; When a newspaper does something so unethical that a LOBBYIST rats them out, it must be pretty low.

  • After Call From Senator Inouye's Office, Small Hawaii Bank Got U.S. Aid: "Sen. Daniel K. Inouye's staff contacted federal regulators last fall to ask about the bailout application of an ailing Hawaii bank that he had helped to establish and where he has invested the bulk of his personal wealth. [...] Even if Inouye were directly involved, it would not violate the rules the Senate sets for itself, experts said. Both the FDIC and the Treasury said the decision was not affected by the involvement of Inouye's office." oh, THAT's reassuring.

Normally, politicians are not much interested in pleasing us. But this time it is different. The politicians now say we need the NGV bus service. So we should have it and be grateful for it.

  • Abhisit facing dreaded ghost from the past - Nationmultimed ia.com: jun07, nation: op ed on abhisit dilemma re bus-lease - calls for his integrity The NGV bus saga is showing no sign of retreat and has obviously become the biggest thorn in Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva' ;s side now. There are many reasons, but the biggest one is the fact that he would have led a ferocious campaign to have the project killed if he had remained in the opposition bloc. This is surely the biggest price Abhisit has had to pay to date for agreeing to the political marriage with Newin Chidchob and his followers. The project was initiated when Thailand' s political turbulence kept attention largely away from what went on in the Cabinet meeting room. Former premier Samak Sundaravej was said to favour the scheme in its bigger version, costing over Bt100 billion compared to about Bt67 billion now, but even so the audacity of the financial figures proposed meant the plan has since been trimmed down, revised and re-submitted many times. The buck, however, is stopping at Abhisit.

  • Impeachment threat over buses - Nationmultimed ia.com: jun01, nation: on senate impeachment-in itiative over bus-lease project Senator Naruemon Siriwat yesterday threatened to launch impeachment proceedings if the government approved the Bt69 billion bus leasing project. Naruemon said she suspected irregularities because the estimated maintenance costs appeared too high and the leasing contract would involve the government 9;s liability for too long a period of time.
  • Bangkok Post : THAI RATH ANALYSIS: jun05, bkk post: a thai rath analysis, on bus-lease etc --- to the point, right analysis: it'll happen The Abhisit government has made a tactical retreat by instructing the National Economic and Social Development Board (NESDB) to review the controversial bus leasing project for the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA). The NESDB will form a committee, which has one month to conclude whether the project should go ahead. Backed by the coalition Bhumjaithai party, the project has been delayed for more than three months amid allegations the party might try to pocket money from leasing buses to the debt-ridden BMTA. The allegations have never been investigated. The political heat is now too much for the Democrat-led government. In addition to a critical media, 40 senators have threatened to block the Budget Bill if the government goes ahead with the bus leasing project.
  • Bangkok Post : Throw a party and carry on polluting!: jun05, bkk post: op ed on world environment day & reality of policies in thailand: collusion between local/regional powers --- politicians, big business, local media --- good read! "They [the organisers] wanted to improve their companies' ; image as being socially responsible,&q uot; said Mrs Janphen. "They sponsored the food banquet, the big tents and what-not. The children were invited to help clean up a nearby beach. After that they had fun dipping themselves in the sea (which Mrs Janphen claims is polluted by waste water released from the factories), only to develop severe rashes and had to be sent to a local health station for treatment that same evening. "Of course the local media never reported on the sickness incident. Their close ties to certain businesses are a given fact." Today, June 5, a variety of campaigns to save our planet Earth will be kicked off around the kingdom (and the world). Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972
