  • The Green Issue - Climate Change - Environment - Energy Efficiency - Consumption - Eat - New York Times: BETTER LIVING WITH LIVESTOCK: Like that of most dairy farmers, Abe Collins?s financial well-being is linked to the quantity and quality of the milk his cows produce. But, he?ll tell you, milk is not the most valuable product that comes from the 130 acres of Vermont grassland he farms. Collins is a leading figure in a nascent movement known as carbon farming, which operates partly on the principle that proper livestock management leads to the rapid development of topsoil and increased plant growth. If Collins has his way, his milk money could be dwarfed by income based on the ability of his pastures to mitigate climate change. Collins practices a grazing methodology known as mob stocking, which involves rotating livestock through small paddocks that are not regrazed until the forage has returned to knee-height.

  • The Best Thing about La Alpujarra?: I´ve been back to the motherland for the past two months and it was lovely. I got to hang out with my friends, have endless cups of tea with my mama, browsed the shops with my sister and I ate all the stuff I miss when I´m out here: boerenkool, my mum´s meatballs, my favorite Chinese, Thai, Japanese, Indian place. Come to think of it, a lot of the last two months was spent eating ;) After a while I tend to forget what I love so much about living here. Yeah, of course, the weather, the space, the country side, the easy pace of living, the tapas and the wonderful fact that they put beer mugs in the freezer so your beer is always icily cold. Small slivers of ice floating around, it´s lovely.

  • Ambio - Pastoral Ecosystems and the Issue of Scale: During the last two decades, many previously held assumptions about African pastoral ecosystems have been abandoned (1?4). In the past, they were considered to be potentially stable (equilibrial) systems which became destabilized by overstocking and overgrazing. Management solutions were prescribed accordingly, drawing their rationale from Hardin's famous ?tragedy of the commons? concept (5), and focusing on a combination of altering land-tenure systems and reducing stocking rates. Range-manageme nt projects based on such notions have met with little success.
