- Underground petroleum tanks mar Albemarle drinking water - C-ville, 6/30/09: As of June 2009, Albemarle County had 34 cases of leaking underground petroleum storage tanks, the highest of any locality covered by the Va. Dept. of Environmental Quality?s (DEQ) Valley Regional Office, which is handling some 200 such cases. Factors leading to the relatively high number of Albemarle cases include its population density, the area's geology, a high number of residences built in the 1960s and 1970s with home heating oil tanks, and a high number of small gas stations with relatively old tanks. In at least one case, residential development near the site of a former business resulted in gasoline contamination of new homes' wells. Prospective home buyers are largely responsible for investigating whether a property might be near the site of a former storage tank. - Energy and Water Integration Act of 2009 - Library of Congress' Thomas Web Site, 6/23/09: On March 5, Sen. Jeff Bingaman of New Mexico introduced the Energy and Water Integration Act of 2009 (S.531), which would require the Departments of Energy and Interior to have in-depth studies done on the connections between energy production/use and water. The bill would also require the Interior Department to maintain the Brackish Groundwater National Desalination Research Facility in New Mexico. As of 6/23/09, the bill was in the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources.

- Residents, officials attend groundwater committee event - Eastern Shore News, 6/20/09: On June 16, the Eastern Shore of Virginia Groundwater Committee held a public event to kick off its work to develop a new plan to guide local groundwater management and protection decisions. The plan, which will update a 1992 plan, will examine all potential water sources in the Shore counties of Accomack and Northampton and will consider several current issues, including recharge capacity compared to existing or predicted use, existing and potential nitrate contamination, and saltwater intrusion.
