• Can A New Implant Coating Technique Create A New Six Million Dollar Man?: Current medical bone replacement implants include a coating of synthetic hydroxyapatite which is similar to naturally occurring apatite. It aids in the bodies attempt to bond with the implant and grow into it and protects from metals leaking into the bloodstream. In this case, scientists have come up with a new way of applying the coating (electrochemic al plating) which works at much lower temps than the traditional method (spraying a plasma form of the synthetic hydroxyapatite . In addition to more even coating, it confers the benefit of working at lower temperatures. As a result, organic chemical or antibiotics could be embedded into the implant to aid in new bone growth or inhibit infection. The key finding is that this technique results in a 33% decrease in level of delamination (failure) in implants treated this way.
