  • HRW blasts UAE over paper ban (Maktoob): Human Rights Watch has accused the United Arab Emirates of a "serious attack" on press freedom after a newspaper was suspended for reporting the alleged doping of race horses owned by UAE royalty. An Abu Dhabi court order for Emarat Al-Youm to shut down for three weeks was a move that "further undermines press freedom in the United Arab Emirates" , HRW said on Thursday.

  • UAE daily banned in defamation ruling (Maktoob): UAE arabic daily Emarat Al-Youm has been suspended for 20 days and its editor-in-chie f fined 20,000 dirhams ($5,448) for defamation relating to a 2006 story accusing a stable of giving steroids to horses. The Abu Dhabi Federal Court of Appeal upheld a lower court's previous ruling on the case brought against the newspaper by the owners of Warsan Stables, UAE daily Gulf News reported on Thursday.
  • Court upholds Emarat Al Youm suspension (AdNation): An appeals court in Abu Dhabi has upheld a ruling to suspend Arabic daily paper Emarat Al Youm and fine its editor in chief over a defamatory story published in 2006. The 2006 story alleged that Warsan Stables had doped horses with steroids for a horse race in Abu Dhabi. The original ruling came down in November 2008.
  • Suspension of Arabic daily upheld (Gulf News): Abu Dhabi Federal Court of Appeal upheld a defamation conviction against Arabic daily Emarat Al Youm, suspending the newspaper for 20 days and fining Editor-in-Chie f Sami Al Reyami Dh20,000 in a defamation case raised by Warsan Stables' owners. The case stemmed from an October 2006 article that accused Warsan Stables of giving steroids to horses in an Abu Dhabi race.
