  • There is a type of rock with a voracious appetite for carbon dioxide | The Economist: Peridotite, -a major constituent of the upper mantle which is just below the Earth?s crust, reacts quickly with carbon dioxide to form carbonates like limestone or marble when exposed to the air. The rock generally occurs some 20km underground but there are places -such as the Omani desert, where tectonic plate shifts have pushed mantle up to the Earth's surface. Omani peridotite absorbs tens of thousands of tonnes of carbon dioxide a year. By drilling and fracturing the rock they believe they can increase the absorption rate of the Omani outcrop alone to 4 billion tonnes of CO2/yr -13% of the worlds current output. In Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Messrs Kelemen and Matter suggest an alternative: pumping the gas from places where it is produced and into underground strata of peridotite.

  • Scientists say a rock can soak up carbon dioxide | Environment | Reuters: Peridotite is the most common rock found in the Earth's mantle, or the layer directly below the crust. It also appears on the surface, particularly in Oman, which is conveniently close to a region that produces substantial amounts of carbon dioxide in the production of fossil fuels.
