- Biodegradation of phthalate esters during the mesophilic anaerobic digestion of sludge: Anaerobic digestion followed by land application is a common treatment and disposal practice of sludge. To date, many studies exist on the anaerobic biodegradation rates of PAE, especially of the easily biodegradable ones, whereas the higher molecular weight PAE have reported to be non-biodegrada ble under methanogenic conditions. It is of high significance that experiments with anaerobic sludge of different origin (US and Europe) showed that degradation of DEHP occurs under methanogenic conditions. Accumulation of high levels of DEHP (more than 60 mg/l) in the anaerobic digester has a negative effect on DBP and DEHP removal rates as well as on the biogas production.
- Occurrence of phthalate esters in the environment of the Netherlands: Overviews of levels of n-dibutylphtha late (DBP) and di(2-ethylhexy l)phthalate (DEHP) found in freshwater, marine water, sediment, and fish in the Netherlands are given. DEHP emissions are directed to water, whereas the calculations reveal that sediments provide a sink for DEHP and there is net transport to air. Although it has been suggested that water is the primary compartment for DBP, fugacity plots suggest that air is the compartment to which emissions are directed dominantly. The data reported are in line with values found in Western Europe.
- Diisobutyl phthalate impairs the androgen-depen dent reproductive development of the male rat: This study was performed to determine whether in utero exposure to DIBP would induce permanent and dose-responsiv e alterations of male reproductive development. Our results show that DIBP can cause severe and specific adverse effects on the male rat reproductive development, with a pattern similar to that of DBP. However, DIBP appeared slightly less potent than DBP in inducing malformations.

PPAR? mRNA levels were reduced by DiBP at GD 19 in testis and liver. In females, DiBP increased anogenital distance and increased ovarian aromatase mRNA levels. This study reveals new targets for phthalates and parabens in fetal male and female rats and contributes to the increasing concern about adverse effects of human exposure to these compounds.
