  • Geological Society - Schist, Scotland: The original rocks were laid down as sediments on an ancient sea floor over 500 million years ago. They were later caught up in the continental collision that formed the Caledonian mountains about 100 million years later. During that time, the sedimentary rocks were squashed and deformed into folds, and changed by heat and pressure to become hard, crystalline metamorphic rocks. The shiny surfaces that these schists often show are due to the presence of the flaky mineral, mica, formed during the metamorphism.
  • Geological Society - Schist, County Tyrone: The Sperrin Mountains, in the west of N. Ireland, are made up largely of ancient metamorphic rocks, such as schist (inset) and quartzite. These rocks were originally deposited as muds and sands on the sea-floor, between 600 and 700 million years ago, but were squashed and metamorphosed during the Caledonian mountain-build ing that took place around 400 million years ago.
  • Geological Society - Schist, Anglesey: These rocks at Porth Dafarch originated as silts and muds on a sea floor some 600 million years ago, Later, they became deeply buried, squashed, and heated to temperatures approaching 500oC. During this process, the rocks have re-crystallise d to form shiny mica-schist.
