  • EPA to Pay Health Bills for People Sickened by Asbestos From Montana Mine - washingtonpost .com: "The Environmental Protection Agency yesterday declared its first-ever "public health emergency,&quo t; saying the federal government will funnel $6 million to provide medical care for people sickened by asbestos from a mine in northwest Montana. The declaration applies to the towns of Libby and Troy, where for decades workers dug for vermiculite, a mineral used in insulation. They were unknowingly poisoning themselves: The vermiculite was contaminated with a toxic form of asbestos, which workers carried home on their clothes. The Department of Health and Human Services estimates that there are 500 people with asbestos-relat ed illnesses such as lung cancer and asbestosis in the two towns, whose populations total about 3,900."

  • FBI Agents Search Everett Home For Deadly Biological Toxin: After responding to a domestic violence call Everett Police discovered a mysterious substance inside a home. Detectives determined it could be Ricin and called the FBI. Agents spent much of Thursday inside the home removing the lethal substance. The husband that was injured during the domestic violence incident was taken to a local hospital with breathing problems. He has since been arrested for domestic violence assault and unlawful imprisonment. The FBI says the man could be facing federal charges if the substance turns out to be Ricin.
