  • gigapan: Kawai Nui: As the largest remaining wetland in Hawai`i, the Kawai Nui Marsh on O`ahu was recently designated as a RAMSAR wetland of international significance. It is actually part of the caldera of the Ko`olau Volcano that makes up the eastern section of O`ahu. The north half of the volcano collapsed into the ocean. This created, along with significant erosion, the spectacular cliffs on the windward side of eastern O`ahu, as seen in the panorama from Ho`omaluhia Botanical Gardens. The State of Hawai`i and the City & County of Honolulu have just reached a management agreement which will guarantee Federal funding for the conservation and restoration of Kawai Nui. It is home to all 4 species of Hawai`i's endangered waterfowl, the Hawaiian duck, coot, moorhen, and stilt. Date Taken: August 14, 2007
